How to discover new music?
Streaming has changed the way we listen to music. Every day, we listen to the same songs, the same artists, without changing. It has become automatic. You open your music streaming app, look at the main page and click the first playlist you like. Normally the same playlist over and over again, relying on a repetitive algorithm to decide what you will listen to, and will give you the same 40 songs, and if you're lucky in a different order. You want to change it, but don't know how to or where to find new music. You don't need to change the software, only the way you use it. My first advice for you when it comes to music is: listen to whole albums, not only a few random tracks. But where to find new albums?
1001 albums generator - every day, you are given a random album from a book "1001 albums to hear before you die" by Robert Dimery, you can find the chronological list here. It won't always be an album you like, but it is a good way to find new albums, new bands, or even new genres you might enjoy.
Last.fm - a well known platforms that takes the music you stream and gives you detailed information on that data. It also recommends new things based on what you like.
Music-Map - insert a singer/band name, and it will give you similar artists.
Everynoise - find new music or singers by genres.
Music rating sites
RateYourMusic, Album Of The Year, Musicboard, pick one and navigate around the site. I find the charts and lists in these sites very helpful to gather new albums to hear. RateYourMusic is my favorite, the user base can be a bit toxic or too extreme on views, but generally, you don't need to engage with them, and of course, there are great people there too, you can find people with similar tastes and check on what they use, or simply go to the charts.
Music curators sites or lists
You don't have to agree with anything they say, just use these sources to create your own list of next albums. Sites like the Rolling Stones, Pitchfork, AllMusic, Metacritic, and The Needle Drop can help you find good music, specially if you have a close taste to the curator's.
Your own playlists
The only song you listen from one artist is not their only one. Start by listening to your favorite songs albums. If you have a favorite singer/band, listen to everything they made and see if they still deserve that title. You might find great gems hidden from you by the only playlists you hear.
Ask your friends (or for online recommendations)
Ask your friends about their favorite albums or singers, maybe you can find new things to talk about and similar tastes, and it can strengthen your friendships.
Reddit has great communities of music listeners, ask around for recommendations of your favorite genres, or simply shuffle around already asked posts. Some subreddits I recommend are: r/MusicRecommendations, r/musicsuggestions, r/LetsTalkMusic or give a quick search for your favorite genres, I bet there is a subreddit for that.
What to do now?
Create your own playlists or album lists, share what you liked with friends or on social media, rate the albums and write reviews. Nothing is also an option, but it won't be as fun.
